Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden
The Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden, established in 1993 and named in honor of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, is one of the most important and extensive botanical institutions in Southeast Asia. Located in the scenic Mae Rim valley about 30 kilometers north of Chiang Mai city, the garden sits at the foot of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park and encompasses a vast area of natural forest, cultivated garden sections, and research facilities. The garden's primary mission is the research, conservation, and display of Thailand's extraordinary plant biodiversity — with particular emphasis on the remarkable flora of the Thai highlands and the surrounding tropical forests. Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden
Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden is one of the most impressive and elaborate private botanical gardens in Asia. Founded by Nongnooch Tansacha in 1980 on what was formerly a fruit plantation, the garden has grown into a world-class attraction combining stunning horticultural displays with Thai cultural performances. The garden is particularly celebrated for its extraordinary collection of cycads — one of the largest and most significant in the world, recognized by Guinness World Records — and its remarkable European-style topiary gardens featuring immaculately trimmed shapes inspired by French formal gardens at Versailles. Nong Nooch also hosts daily cultural shows that include traditional Thai dance performances, Muay Thai demonstrations, and elephant shows in a purpose-built cultural arena.
Bangkok Butterfly Garden & Insectarium
The Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is a delightful nature attraction located within the green expanse of Chatuchak Park in northern Bangkok. The facility was established to promote awareness and conservation of Thailand's remarkable insect biodiversity — the country is home to an extraordinary variety of butterfly and moth species given its tropical climate and diverse habitats. The centerpiece is a large mesh-enclosed butterfly garden where visitors walk freely among dozens of live butterfly species in all stages of their life cycle — from caterpillar and chrysalis to fully formed adults nectaring on flowering plants. The adjacent insectarium houses an impressive collection of mounted insects, beetles, and display cases illustrating Thailand's insect diversity, alongside live exhibits of stick insects, rhinoceros beetles, and other species.
Rama IX Royal Park (Suan Luang Rama IX)
Rama IX Royal Park — officially named Suan Luang Rama IX — is Bangkok's largest public park, developed in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX). The park is a magnificent, carefully landscaped green space combining botanical gardens, ornamental lakes, cultural pavilions, and sport facilities. Its central botanical garden section features one of Bangkok's finest collections of tropical and ornamental plants arranged in beautifully themed garden zones. The park includes a striking garden representing the twelve regions of Thailand, a herb garden, palm garden, bamboo garden, and a large central lake with fountains and a floating botanical island. Every December, the park hosts a spectacular light and sound show on the anniversary of King Bhumibol's birthday, illuminating the grounds with tens of thousands of colored lights.
